Sara Jones is the Director of the American University School of International Service Office of Career Development for SIS, where she oversees career development support for SIS undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni.
She loves this work because her own career path has been winding, and she’s greatly benefited from strong support along the way. Shortly after college, she spent 2 years in the Peace Corps with South Africa, which she loved. But when she returned, she struggled to build a longer-term career that she found as fulfilling.
She got an MA and tried teaching English to immigrants, then later went to culinary school and tried cooking professionally, then finally food writing… but none of these was quite it.
Eventually, she got some great career coaching, and got energized by helping others through the same questions she’d struggled with for years. She trained as a professional coach to give her the skills to do that and moved into higher ed because she loves supporting students.
Today, she is thrilled to be at SIS, and passionate about giving ALL students and alumni here– regardless of background or social capital – the best opportunities to design and thrive in their international relations careers and lives.
