Inaugural Chair, Department of Foreign Policy and Global Security, American University, School of International Service
Ambassador (ret.) Piper Campbell is a professor of practice at American University’s School of International Service (SIS). A former diplomat who left the State Department in 2019 with the rank of Minister Counselor, her areas of expertise include East Asia and navigating multilateral organizations. These two specialties combined when she had the opportunity to lead the U.S. Mission to ASEAN based in Jakarta from June-December 2018. Prior to that, she served as Chief of Mission, U.S. Embassy Ulaanbaatar (2012-2015); taught at the National Defense University (2015-2017) and led State Department recruitment (2017). In addition to teaching, she chairs SIS’s Department of Foreign Policy and Global Security, as well as the ASEAN Studies Initiative.
