Atherton Tribute Wall
A place for AWIU Members to Honor, Remember, and Celebrate Each Other
Named for Martha Atherton, who, through her warmth, strength, and belief in the power of sisterhood exemplified what is best in AWIU.
Marty Atherton’s philosophy of contributing to international understanding through her personal, professional and collegial relationships and of “paying it forward” drives much of our AWIU mission today. As our organization continues to move forward and continues to close the gap between cultures and continues to encourage social understanding and continues to encourage religious tolerance, Marty remains a part of who we are collectively and who we are as individuals.

Remembering Martha Artherton
Martha Atherton’s legacy will live on with the lives extended due to science advancements she funded through her work for a cure of Cystic Fibrosis and hospitals where she funded better and safer equipment for the public. Her legacy lives on through her work with organizations like Sister Cities International and American Women For International Understanding, where she helped build a framework for future generations of citizen diplomats. Her legacy lives on in our hearts and minds when we reach into our memories to consider when faced with obstacles and ask ourselves, “What would Marty say?” Martha Atherton was an amazing, inspiring woman.
